Google Voice is Not the Best Choice

So you’re looking for a second phone line to use as a work number or connect your existing numbers, and you’ve stumbled upon Google Voice. Google Voice gives you one number for all your phones, and offers a variety of phone services all for FREE! So why would you look any further? Well, you know what they say about things that sound too good to be true. With a little research into Google Voice, you will quickly discover some negative reviews and the product’s shortcomings.

Quality and Reliability

Like all technology, Google Voice’s services are fallible. Google Voice offers many competitive features, however, their services have received mixed reviews and the quality seems to be hit or miss. Failure reports include poor call quality (calls may be accompanied by clicking sounds or may cut out) and even dropped calls. Another feature, the voicemail-to-text transcription, often produces laughable results. Google claims greater accuracy when analyzing messages left by slow-talking native English speakers with no background noise, but users beg to differ when they read transcriptions that butcher even the simplest voice messages.

No Tech Support

With any business, communication should be the top priority. With the many complaints Google Voice has received, Google’s response is to simply pass the blame onto your cell carrier, your bandwidth, your phone settings- anything to preserve their reputation. What customers really want is a dedicated support team who will address their problems and find solutions. Google Voice is virtually unreachable with no help numbers, no direct email addresses and no branch offices. They simply rely on a crowdsourced tech support model- an online discussion forum where many users’ questions and problems go unanswered, aside from responses left by other Google Voice users who may be experiencing similar problems.

Privacy Concerns

Aside from having access to your address book and text messages, Google servers store your phone conversations, transcripts, location information, and more. Despite denial, Google is known to cooperate with spying agencies like the NSA. Hackers are another privacy threat. Google accounts may be hacked, giving the perpetrator access to your emails, phone numbers, text messages, and voicemails. Google’s all in one services can give hackers a one-stop shop to ruin your entire communications system.

With its shortcomings in quality, reliability, support, and privacy, its clear to see that Google Voice is not the best choice.  When it comes to Google voice, as the saying goes- you get what you pay for. This, however, does not mean that you should have to pay an arm and a leg for reliable communications services.  Line 1 Communications offers an affordable, customizable communications solution with reliable service and accessible support.
